Surfing Ability Levels

Understanding your surfing ability is essential for choosing the right waves, boards, and coaching. Below is a guide to help you identify your level, whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience.

Level 1 – Beginner

  • You have never surfed before or have very little experience with surfing.

Level 2

  • You can stand up on the board comfortably in broken/whitewater waves.
  • You can paddle short distances.
  • You can ride a longer board for your height/weight.

Level 3 – Intermediate

  • You can catch waves without assistance and can comfortably traverse (turn) across an unbroken (green) wave in both directions.
  • You can duck dive your board.
  • You can paddle 100 meters + through breaking waves and current to reach the lineup.
  • You can surf overhead waves breaking over reef.
  • You have moved on from funboards and are now riding boards closer in shape to shortboards.

Level 4

  • You are confident surfing waves overhead to double overhead.
  • You can perform basic surfing manoeuvres such as top turns, and cutbacks.
  • You have strong paddling ability and can paddle through overhead waves and strong current to reach the lineup.

Level 5 – Advanced

  •  You are comfortable surfing waves in double-triple overhead size and fast shallow hollow reef breaks.
  • You are prepared for any surf conditions the ocean presents.

Choosing the Right Level

Knowing your skill level helps you select the best waves and boards for your progression. It also ensures you’re surfing safely and maximizing your time in the water. Wherever you are in your surfing journey, focus on building confidence and enjoying the ride.
